y = (m)^t*x + b
"Y = MX + B" describes a straight line—simple, clean, and predictable. But in life, we know it’s never that straightforward. I’m proposing a new take on this idea: Y equals M equals B. It’s a framework for understanding your path toward success and fulfillment, combining action (M), baseline (B), and leverage (L) into a cohesive personal formula.
Y: The Outcome
Y represents your output, your goal—what you're trying to achieve, whether it's personal growth, professional milestones, or learning a new skill set. It’s the final result after everything else in the equation has been factored in. Think of Y as the measure of success you're after, a variable you can actually control through consistent iteration of the other elements.
M: The Multiplier
M is the multiplier—your skill level, your capabilities, or the effort you put into something. In a practical sense, M is everything you bring to the table: the work, the sweat equity, the hustle. But it's also your personal growth over time, and improving M is about moving yourself from 0 to 1.0.
M encompasses not just effort, but also how you apply leverage (we’ll get to that). In your case, leveling M could mean going from “basic familiarity” to “mastery” in software engineering, product management, or cloud deployment. It’s about not just having the idea but being able to fully implement it, taking it through to live deployment.
B: The Constant
B is the baseline—your starting point. It's the foundation from which everything else scales. For some people, B might represent where they’re at now in their career, their existing systems, or how much mental or emotional bandwidth they have left to put toward self-improvement.
Importantly, B isn’t static. You can raise your baseline through consistent habit-building, learning, and refining your approach. In your life, B could be your current automated systems or processes that handle basic tasks, freeing you up to focus on higher-value work.
X: The Input
X is what’s outside of you—external tools, resources, or information. For a long time, I focused on X, obsessing over tools, software, and methodologies. But it’s not just about finding the right tool; it’s about how you apply these tools to multiply your M. Too much focus on X without enough development of your own capabilities (M) leads to a shallow kind of progress. The real challenge is synthesizing X with M to truly elevate yourself.
Leverage (L): The Game Changer
This is where the equation takes on an exponential dimension. L represents leverage points—systems, people, or automations that multiply your impact without you having to put in equal amounts of effort. You can’t do everything yourself, so part of the equation is finding ways to scale through leverage. This might be delegating, automating repetitive tasks, or building systems that work in the background.
Leverage can also mean expanding your own skillset so that each new task gets easier and easier over time. In a sense, as you add more leverage to your life, your “M” (multiplier) becomes more potent.
Bringing it All Together: Y = M²L + B
So, what happens when you bring all these factors together? The equation looks something like this:
Y = M²L + B
Where:
Y is the output you're striving for (success, goal, completion)
M² is the squared multiplier (because every effort gets stronger over time with mastery)
L is leverage, amplifying your efforts beyond just what you can do alone
B is your baseline, or where you start, factoring in your existing systems
Moving From 0 to 1
So how do you apply this in your day-to-day? The core challenge is moving yourself from 0 to 1.0. In any project—whether it’s a new product, skill, or venture—this means focusing on mastering the fundamentals before worrying about exponential growth or advanced tactics.
For instance, take software engineering. Your goal might be to go from knowing the basics to being able to fully deploy an app from front-end to back-end, with everything in place: security, cloud service deployment, and user authentication. You’ve got to bring your M to 1.0 here.
Likewise, the process of moving from idea to implementation is about eliminating distractions, honing your focus, and steadily increasing your multiplier. In a sense, the faster you can go from 0 to 1, the sooner you start leveraging your own output.
Iterating Toward the Ideal
As with any equation, it’s about finding balance. If you’re stuck at 0.9, it might mean reducing some variables, cutting out distractions, and optimizing your current systems. You’ll continue iterating toward 1.0, refining your processes and honing your leverage.
Ultimately, the key is to trust the process—to continuously work on improving your M (your skills, effort, and focus) while using leverage (L) to scale, and keeping your baseline (B) strong with good foundational systems. From there, your Y—the ultimate goal—will naturally follow.
How I'm Applying These Concepts Across Domains:
Multimedia Art & Creative Processes:
